Hi everyone,

I want to acknowledge what is going on in our country right now - days of unrest and protest stemming from the tragic killings of black people at the hands of the police. We stand in solidarity with the fight against police brutality, systemic oppression, racism, white supremacy and the historic and continued oppression of the black community.

BLACK LIVES MATTER.

I am so grateful to the people who were willing to get out there and protest in spite of the obvious risks, because that is how change is made. The lifetimes of civil rights work and still, George Floyd. Ahmaud Arbery. Nina Pop. Breonna Taylor. This is not new, but rather a few high profile cases added to a long, long list of victims of deep and lasting racism in our country.

Silence is complicity. The old ActUp slogan during the AIDS crisis was “silence = death.” That rings true again. Silence and neutrality are tools of the oppressor, and I’d rather us all speak up – even if imperfectly – than not speak at all.

Let’s all be sure to use our voices. Be counted in the census. Sign up for absentee ballots. Show up for each other. Call out acts of racism where you see them in your community. I am personally giving resources and taking action guided by the resources that I am linking below.

You may have noticed that this week our IG account has muted all ‘regular’ business content to make space for and amplify BIPOC voices — the voices that need to be heard the most right now. We are sharing THEIR work and their direct experience only, in our feed and stories.

There is a lot of learning and unlearning to do, for all of us.

If you’d like to talk more with me about what you would like to see from Leota, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Love,

Sarah
